APEC Coaches – Guidelines for use of your skills

Marketing Yourself

·  The APEC Foundation and Advanced programmes have been designed to teach you the practical use of some psychological principles in order to enhance your impact as a coach. As a Centre10 Coach you have undertaken Centre10 psychology/mental training.

·  Please ensure you understand, and where appropriate communicate to clients, the distinction between being "an equestrian coach with enhanced/accredited/Centre10 training in psychology/mental performance" RATHER than being “qualified" in mental training or psychology - which you cannot claim to be. Therefore, please avoid using the words “psychologist", “psychology/mental coach” or “mindset coach” to describe you or your services as this implies that psychology is your primary service.

·  You are also welcome to use our names in conjunction with the programme if you wish to.

·  It is fine to organise one-to-one or group un-mounted sessions covering some of the principles you've learnt over the past six months, but we ask you not to advertise this service outside your current client database as this suggests it is your primary function and therefore could be misleading to new clients. We understand some of you are qualified counsellors and practitioners in your own right, so this would not apply for you!

Coaching Qualifications

· Centre10 is not a formal qualification of coaching. Rather the completion of the Centre10 Advanced Coaching Programme represents a standard of excellence that serves to reinforce the formal qualifications they already hold with either the BHS or other recognised coaching bodies.

· Completion of the Advanced Programme therefore does NOT make you a qualified coach, however it is intended to add significant value to the formal coaching qualifications you currently have.  In doing so the Advanced Programme is recognised and accredited by the BHS for the purposes of CPD.

· We may occasionally invite non-coaches to undertake our training (e.g. vets, physios, horse behaviourists, professional grooms) because we believe that there is value to the skills we develop beyond the role of a formal coach. In such cases they must adhere to the professional standards laid out by their own governing bodies.

· As a basic standard within our coaching practice we would expect every coach to have adequate insurance for the work they undertake.

· We are not a governing body and therefore cannot enforce these practices, however, we reserve the right to remove anyone from the Centre10 Advanced Coaches list at our own discretion, in particular if they chose not to comply with these practices or if they do not maintain adequate training.

Referrals

·  If you feel out of your depth with a client, please refer them onto someone else who is more qualified to deal with that particular issue. Databases for local councillors are relatively easy to find online. We would suggest that Cognitive Behavioural Therapists are likely to be most aligned to the Centre10 philosophy but you may want to look for a therapist who specialises in certain areas like bereavement or relationship counselling.
